SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training

Skywarn is a program the National Weather Service uses to improve severe storm watches and warnings. Trained volunteers serve as storm spotters. These spotters pass on vital “ground truth” information to forecasters during severe weather events. They are the eyes and ears not only for forecasters, but for the community as a whole Skywarn volunteers come from all walks of life, and generally have two things in common – an interest in weather as well as an interest in serving their community.

 

Skywarn classes

Certain organizations and citizens often involved in Skywarn include:

  • Emergency Medical Service
  • Emergency Management Agency
  • Law Enforcement
  • Fire Department and Rescue Squads
  • Amateur Radio Groups
  • Colleges, Technical Schools
  • Businesses
  • Postal Service Employee’s
  • Utility Company Employee’s
  • General Public

Any person can become a Skywarn storm spotter, but they must first complete the necessary training from the National Weather Service. These training classes are offered annually in Waycross, GA. There is no charge for the class.

The Next training class is:

December 11, 2014

6:00 pm. – 8:30 pm.

Ware County CERT

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program program is administered by FEMA’s Community Preparedness Division. CERT is a training program that prepares people to helpthemselves, their families and their neighbors in the event of a disaster in their community. Through CERT, citizens can learn about disaster preparedness and receivetraining in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. With this training, volunteers can provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims before emergency first responders arrive on scene. CERT volunteers also support the community year-round by participating in community preparedness outreach activities and distributing materials on disaster preparedness and education.
